Illumination

Tom Burtness has been involved in the design and installation of street and area lighting for over 30 years.  During that time, he has developed a set of design philosophies that guides Burtness Engineering Services’ innovative value-driven approach to lighting design.  For example, BES has pioneered in the area of the economic revitalization of core business districts through high quality lighting design of community streetscape installations that has resulted in millions of dollars of private investment in bricks-and-mortar businesses following the public investment in streetlight and associated streetscape infrastructure.

And now as we sit on the verge of the LED revolution, BES is poised to be on the forefront of the implementation of LED and adaptive control technologies that promise enormous gains in both energy efficiency and in quality of illumination.

Burtness Engineering Services is rare indeed to be both illumination design experts and licensed professional electrical engineers.  Most electrical engineers and civil engineers who are asked to accomplish lighting designs have no education or training in illumination design and are being asked to work outside their areas of capability, resulting in marginal quality installations that fall far short of reaping all of the benefits available to clients.

Tom Burtness, however, has been a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Street and Area Lighting Committee since 2004, and is in the forefront of the illumination engineering practice.  Specializing in outdoor roadway, street, and area lighting, Mr. Burtness has years of in-depth lighting design experience.  Please see our engagement listing and our project photograph pages to see specific example projects and criteria.
